This week, we delved into an array of subject matter, ranging from sociological research methods to culture, socialization, and social systems, interactions, and structures. Socialization, in particular, is a very significant factor in influencing individual and/or collective action and interaction.

For this blog assignment, you are expected to create a Wordle image that includes all the various socializing agents you can think of when it comes to your own socialization as a human being. Click on "Create your own." Type and/or paste all the words representing these personal agents of socialization in the large dialog box (as many words can be entered as long as spaces or commas are typed between them). Once you have entered all the words you wanted to include, click on the "Go"  button just below the box. Your Wordle image will appear, and you will be able to edit the format and layout before saving the image. You can also delete words from your Wordle even after you have created it by right-clicking on the word you want to delete (before saving it). After you have completed your Wordle image, please make sure to save it and paste the URL (website address/link) of your image in the comments section below.

Below are two different graphic presentations of  the same Wordle . . .
Please note that Wordle organizes by single words only, so if you enter a word such as "high school," the words "high" and "school" will be organized separately, because a space is identified as a separator between two words.

Your response should be posted below via the "Add Comment" link below. Please also make sure to include your name and email address as prompted (Note: your email address will not be published online). Each student is expected to "reply" to at least two comments posted by his/her peers by the following Sunday (June 17, 2012).

This blog assignment is due: Monday, June 11, 2012, 5:30 p.m., EST

Hi, I can relate to a lot of the words in your wordle, but I was just wondering about your title "Before I found Him", Who are you referring to? Is it God? Just wondering.

I was just too overwhelmed with things to put! 10 is when I moved to America, so I thought after 10/American socialization would be a nice place to start.

I really like how specific the words/places are that you used, especially night clubs, play dates and beauty salon. It's funny to think that we think of play dates for socializing children but they also socialize parents, too. I've never been a parent so I'm curious--what are some of the norms of arranging/going to a play date?

I'm so sorry for the delayed response! Actually, it's fun for both the children and parents. While the children are off playing with one another, the parents (usually mothers) will exchange coupons and recipes, discuss school concerns, give tips on gardening, and advise on effective parenting. I'm very fortunate that I live in a very tight knit and friendly community. Not to mention an added bonus is that it's also very diverse. My children and I look forward to our bi-weekly play dates with my neighbors and their children! Not only does it give me an additional sense of purpose, but the children as well. Thanks for inquiring!

I love the words you used! I'm a little curious as to why you said sorrow, fear, and weight. Do they have something to do with the country where you were born?

Reply
Mariama
6/15/2012 05:50:40 am

I used sorrow because, I have experience some sorrowful events in my life and it has affected me to have different perspective to on some things. And because I have a fear about failure, I decided to do anything to make my life a better one like going to school so i wouldn't fail in life. Weight i think has subconsciously affected everyone in some shape or form because of the society we find ourselves in. But yes weight is still something i struggle with. I hope i answered your question and they make sense to you. Thanks.

I used to be part of my high school's improv club and I also used to work for/with Comedy Sportz in Arlington, VA. I also used to watch Whose Line is it Anyway? with my dad when I was younger. (prefer American to the British version surprisingly and was so sad when it got cancelled) Performing Improv helped me think on my feet faster and be more comfortable public speaking, plus it's just a lot of fun. I get to play games and hopefully make people laugh. I love acting and improv is a type of acting.

I don't mind sharing at all! The Satanic Mechanics are University of Maryland College Park's Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast group. Every semester we perform two showings of RHPS and one non-RHPS. This upcoming fall our non-rocky is Ghostbusters. Shadow casting is when the movie is playing on a screen behind the actors while the actors are performing the movie as well. The actors don't say any of the lines though, they just mouth them. They've become a second family to me and a lot of people in the mechanics are very important people in my life. Also, the mechanics make me feel good most of the time as well as safe.

it looks to me that some of the words you use like cancer and hospital are very private. I respect that you are comfortable enough to vocalize that some of these things are what in fact helped to socialize you today and helped in fact made you the strong person you are now.

Those aspects happened long ago, between ages 4-6, But I am just now realizing some of the effects it had on my development. An example is: myy mom was always by my side whenever I was in the hospital (night/day). It was what I needed. But I realize now, that that has shaped my character in that, I prefer being around people than to being isolated.

Cancer and hospitals are things people dont like to talk about because it automatically sends a negative vibe, but I like the fact that it influence you in a good way. I respect you for that.
